Dubai Silicon Oasis is a technology free zone with a suburb attached, on the Al Ain road side of the city, and the suburb is the part most people mean. It has a mall, schools, a hospital, villa neighbourhoods and a great many mid-rise apartment buildings, and it offers a settled, self-contained life at prices well below the coast, a short drive from the airport. The city calls it DSO, and the name means what it says: a technology free zone, with the suburb attached.
The place
The district lies along the Dubai to Al Ain road with Academic City and Dubai Land Residence Complex on one side and the older districts of the east on the other. The free zone's offices and the university sit at its centre; the villa neighbourhoods, two of them, sit at its quieter edge; and the apartment buildings, from the district's first to the latest towers by the city's volume developers, fill the plots between. The mall serves the district and its neighbours, and the roads inside are wide and calm.
