What is counted

Each plane is counted once per flight for every spot its track passes within 750 m of while below the chosen altitude, averaged across the sampled days. A plane at 1,000 ft overhead is far louder than one at 2,900 ft a few streets away, so read the figure as how often, not how loud.

Why a spread of days

DXB lands and takes off in whichever direction the wind allows. On any one day, one end of the runway takes the low arrivals and the other the departures, which climb fast. Sampling every fourth day over two months averages both patterns.

Where it falls short

The flight path is only about 1.5 km wide, so a community’s centre can miss it while its edge sits underneath; look at the map for a particular building. Planes on the runway itself are not counted, which understates places beside the airport such as Al Garhoud. Tracking relies on volunteer receivers, so a few low flights are missed.
