The area
Motor City is the quiet suburb around the racetrack. Union Properties built it beside the Dubai Autodrome on the Dubailand side of the city as a community of mid-rise apartment blocks, a villa neighbourhood and a mall, with the track and the kart circuit at its centre, and it has settled into something its name does not suggest: a leafy, low-key place for families, with wide streets, good schools nearby and prices that sit below the newer communities around it.
The community lies between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Hessa Street, with Damac Hills on one side, Dubai Sports City on another, Arabian Ranches across the highway and Dubai Studio City behind. The autodrome, with its grandstands, its kart track and its business park, is the community's centre. Around it sit the apartment quarter, a set of mid-rise blocks on tree-lined avenues built in a loosely Mediterranean style; the villa neighbourhood, a green enclave of houses and bungalows on the community's far side; and the mall, which serves the community and its neighbours. A newer townhouse quarter has been added at the edge.
Apartments in the mid-rise blocks, from studios to family layouts, many of them larger than the equivalent new stock nearby; villas and bungalows in the villa neighbourhood, now mature, with gardens; and townhouses in the newer quarter. The apartment blocks were built in phases by the community's developer and are consistent in plan and finish; the differences are age, management and whether a block faces the avenues, the track or the car parks.
By car. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Hessa Street are at the gate, the Marina and the Media City offices are a manageable commute, the Mall of the Emirates is close, Downtown and the airport are longer runs. There is no Metro; buses reach the nearest stations on Sheikh Zayed Road. Inside the community the avenues are wide and quiet, with the exception of race weekends, when the track fills and the roads around it follow.
The mall carries the supermarket, the cafes, the restaurants and the daily services, and the apartment quarter's avenues carry more cafes and small shops at street level. The track and the kart circuit are the community's odd pleasure, and the business park beside them its office quarter. One of the city's larger international schools sits inside the community, with more in Sports City and Arabian Ranches a short drive away and nurseries in the blocks. The parks and pools carry the weekends, and the Al Qudra cycle track is close.
Families who want a settled, green community with a school inside the gate at prices below Dubai Hills and the newer suburbs. Tenants who want a large flat with trees outside it and a manageable commute to the Marina. Buyers who prefer an established block with a track record to a new tower with a promise. Anyone who likes the sound of engines on a weekend.
